Ditton Lodge school marked its official transition from first school to full primary school status with a visit from Frankie Dettori on Thursday.
The celebration came after 18 months of building work at the St John’s Avenue School, recently rated ‘outstanding’ by Government inspectors from Ofsted, which has cost around £3 million and provides new classrooms, an ICT Discovery Centre, a new gym and a landscaped playground.
The school can now take pupils between the ages of four and 11. It currently has pupils from four to nine years old. They were triggered by neighbouring Suffolk County Council’s switch to two-tier education, which is due to come into effect next year.
Until now youngsters from Ditton Lodge go into the Suffolk system after the age of nine and move on to one of Newmarket’s two middle schools, which are now set to close.
Father-of-five Frankie, who lives in Stetchworth, cut a ribbon to officially open all the facilities and mark the school’s new status.
Also present at the celebrations led by headteacher Angela Finn were Newmarket Mayor Cllr Keith Bovill and Cllr John Powley, the chairman of Cambridgeshire County Council.
An open evening will be running from 7pm to 9pm on Thursday for former parents current families and friends to attend.

Spreading the word - OMi technologies getting noticed
Recently, the huge benefits that OMi interactive technologies are delivering to mainstream and special education needs pupils have been getting some attention from leading education innovators.
Merlin John, the founder and past editor of the Times Educational Supplement, and champion of creative use of ICT in schools, has published an article on his website, agent4change.com, about the Kingwood CLC and Charlton school projects and the difference they are making to teaching and learning.
Futurelab, the independent not-for-profit organisation that is dedicated to transforming teaching and learning through the use of innovative practice and technology, has also run the stories. Mishka Klotz, OMi Managing Director, commented: "We are delighted that these innovative people and organisations recognise the benefits that OMi technologies can bring to teaching and learning. We have pioneered their use in education and are looking forward to more students and teachers benefitting from them in the future."
Communication Works - Sharing the Latest Technologies
OMi recently attended the Communication Works - Sharing the Latest Technologies event at Charlton School in Greenwich to show the exciting interactive projection system, OMi-Vista. The stand was busy all day with teachers and pupils excited by the possibilities this intuitive learning technology brings. There was also a lot of interest following the presentation we gave on the seminar programme about Charlton School's use of the system with their SEN pupils in the innovative Rebound Therapy, which sees the interactive images projected onto a trampoline to help develop physical and mental skills at the same time.
Naidex 2010
The Naidex show at the NEC in April was a great success for us and we enjoyed demonstrating our interactive systems to the many visitors to the stand. Daniel May (pictured here playing with the OMi-Beam system) couldn't get enough of these exciting technologies and returned to the stand several times to play football and the drums using OMi-Vista, and had several different musical experiences with OMi-Beam.
Mishka Klotz, OMi Managing Director, said: "It was great to see the enjoyment that Daniel and the many other children that visited the stand got from the use of these systems. It's especially rewarding when you see the kids with very limited mobility making music with the slightest movement and realising that it is under their control.
BETT 2010
OMi exhibited at the BETT show at London's Olympia in January 2010 and experienced a record number of visitors to the stand. The show was a great success with high levels of interest in the unique OMi interactive learning environment shown in partnership with Kingwood CLC.

iSpace
Kingwood CLC in Fulham has been working with OMi to create a new interactive learning space concept called "iSpace", a flexible and dynamic learning environment that benefits people of all ages and abilities. The iSpace technology has variable operating levels making it easy to switch the learning content to meet the needs of multiple users. The interactive area provides opportunities for exploration, experimentation and performance using gesture-controlled interactive technologies. The room incorporates interactive light beams and interactive floor and wall projection systems that can be customized for pupils’ learning. This technology offers enormous potential for developing multimedia studies as part of the 14-19 curriculum.
